What makes a reef tank look vibrant?

Stable water chemistry, low nutrient levels, suitable lighting and good flow keep a reef tank looking vibrant. Removing solid waste with a sock, pad or roller mat, and dissolved waste with a protein skimmer and water changes, stops nutrients building up and dulling coral colour.

Do I need a filter sock on a reef tank?

You do not strictly need one, but a filter sock is a simple way to remove solid debris before it decays. Many sump reefs run a sock alongside a protein skimmer. Tanks that rely on other mechanical filtration, such as a roller mat, can do without.

What micron filter sock is best for a reef tank?

Around 100 micron is a sensible starting point for most sump reefs because it balances catching debris against clogging. Finer socks such as 50 micron catch smaller particles but need cleaning more often. Our shop stocks 50, 100, 150, 200, 400 and 800 micron socks.

Are nylon mesh filter socks better than felt?

Neither is better in every case. Nylon mesh rinses clean and is reused, with an exact opening size, while felt traps particles through its depth and catches finer material but is a consumable. Choose mesh to cut running costs and felt for the finest capture.

Can a filter sock replace a protein skimmer?

No. A filter sock removes solid particles, while a protein skimmer removes dissolved organic compounds that pass straight through any mesh. Most reef keepers use both, because they tackle different parts of water quality.
