Is Seachem Vibrant reef safe?

Check the manufacturer's current label for reef and invertebrate suitability and for dosing, because that is the authoritative source. We do not sell or test Vibrant. With any new additive in a coral tank, start at a low dose and watch your livestock and water tests closely.

What micron filter sock is best for a reef tank?

A 100 micron nylon mesh sock is a sensible starting point, as it catches visible detritus without clogging too quickly. Finer ratings such as 50 micron trap smaller particles but clog faster, and 200 micron lets more through. Aqua Filter Socks stocks 50, 100, 150, 200, 400 and 800 micron, with other ratings made to order.

How often should I clean a reef filter sock?

As a rule of thumb, many reef keepers rinse or swap their sock every few days, and more often on a heavily stocked tank. Trapped waste keeps decomposing while it sits in the flow, so a clogged sock stops helping. Nylon mesh rinses clean and is reused, while felt is a consumable that you replace.

Do filter socks remove nitrate and ammonia?

No, a filter sock removes particles only, not dissolved nitrate or ammonia. It helps indirectly by taking out detritus before it breaks down and releases nutrients. Water changes, biological filtration and a protein skimmer deal with dissolved waste.

Do I need a protein skimmer if I use a filter sock?

Not always, but the two do different jobs. A sock catches solid particles, and a skimmer removes dissolved organics. Many reef keepers run both, though a lightly stocked tank with regular water changes can manage with a sock alone.

Can I get a filter sock made to fit my sump?
