Do I need a filter sock in my aquarium?

You do not strictly need one, but it is a simple way to remove solid waste before it breaks down in the water. They are most useful on sump-based marine and freshwater tanks where water flows through a defined outlet. If you have a small tank with an internal filter, a sock is usually unnecessary.

How often should I change a filter sock in a reef tank?

Many reef keepers change or clean a sock every few days to about once a week, depending on feeding, stocking and micron rating. Finer socks such as 50 micron clog sooner than 200 micron ones. Change it before it clogs fully, because a full sock holds waste that can decompose in the water flow.

What micron filter sock is best for a marine aquarium?

A 100 to 200 micron sock suits most marine aquariums, with 50 micron for polishing and a 400 to 800 micron sock for coarse pre-filtering. Start coarser and move finer only if the water still looks cloudy. Very fine socks of 1 to 25 micron are available to order but block quickly in everyday use.

Can I use a filter sock in a freshwater aquarium?

Yes, a filter sock works in any sump or outlet-fed freshwater system in the same way as in a marine one. The ratings and ring sizes are identical. Because freshwater tanks often carry plant debris and fish waste, a 200 micron sock is a sensible starting point.

Can I wash and reuse a felt filter sock?

Felt is treated as a consumable, so it is usually replaced rather than reused. It traps particles through the depth of the fabric, which means rinsing does not fully clear it. If you want a sock you can wash and reuse, choose nylon mesh, which rinses clean.

What is the difference between a filter sock and a pond bag?

A filter sock is a ring-topped tube that sits in an aquarium sump outlet, while a pond bag is a larger drawstring bag. The shop's standard socks come in 4 inch and 7 inch ring sizes, and its pond bags are 11 inch with a drawstring. Choose by the size of the outlet or housing you are filtering.
