What is the difference between a filter sock and a filter bag?

A filter sock is a tube-shaped bag with a ring or collar at the open end, typically used in aquarium sumps, while "filter bag" is the broader term that also covers drawstring pond bags and bags for industrial housings. They work in the same way, straining particles from a liquid that flows through the fabric. Aqua Filter Socks offers 4 inch and 7 inch ring socks, 11 inch drawstring pond bags and made-to-order size 1 to 4 housing bags.

Are mesh filter bags better than felt?

Neither is better in every case, because they do different jobs. Mesh has an exact opening, rinses clean and is reused, while felt traps particles through its depth and is a consumable. Choose mesh for a precise cut-off and reuse, and felt for heavy fine-particle loads, oil absorption or chemically demanding liquids.

What micron filter bag should I use?

Pick a rating just below the size of the smallest particle you need to remove. Aqua Filter Socks stocks 50, 100, 150, 200, 400 and 800 micron, and makes 1, 5, 10, 25, 75, 300 and 600 micron to order. If a bag clogs too quickly, move to a coarser rating or filter in stages with a coarse bag first.

Can I get filter bags in a custom size?

Yes. Custom sizes and size 1 to 4 bags for filter housings are made to order, and a quote is returned within one working day. Send the diameter, length, micron rating, material and quantity to speed things up.

Can businesses buy filter bags on account?

Yes. Aqua Filter Socks offers trade accounts, purchase orders and VAT invoices for business buyers. This suits laboratories, metalworking shops, plating lines, aquaculture sites, water treatment operators and biodiesel producers.

Which filter bag material can handle acids?

Polypropylene felt resists acids and alkalis, to about 90 °C, and is the usual choice for chemicals and plating. Polyester mesh also copes with acids, whereas nylon mesh is not suitable for acids. For hotter or more aggressive liquids, Nomex felt reaches about 200 °C and PTFE felt about 250 °C.
