Is a gravel vacuum or a filter sock better for cleaning an aquarium?

They do different jobs. A gravel vacuum removes waste from the substrate during a water change, while a filter sock traps floating debris continuously in a sump or overflow. If you have to choose one, a gravel vacuum suits most tanks; a sock is the better choice if you already run a sump.

How often should I clean my aquarium?

A common routine is a 10-25% water change every one to two weeks, vacuuming a section of substrate each time. Heavily stocked or heavily fed tanks need more frequent attention. Clean in stages, so you do not disturb all of your beneficial bacteria at once.

Can I use household cleaning products to clean an aquarium?

No. Soap, detergent, bleach and sprays can leave residues that are harmful to fish and invertebrates. Clean the glass with a dedicated scrubber and rinse equipment in plain water or old tank water. If you must sanitise an empty tank or equipment, rinse it thoroughly before it goes anywhere near livestock.

Do snails and shrimp keep a tank clean on their own?

No. A clean-up crew can graze algae and pick at leftover food in an established tank, but it does not remove suspended particles or waste buried in the substrate. The animals also add to the waste load themselves. Treat them as a helpful extra alongside a siphon and good filtration.

What micron filter sock should I use for an aquarium?

For general use, 100-200 micron is a common starting point. Coarser socks of 400-800 micron suit heavier debris and run longer between rinses, while finer ratings such as 50 micron catch more haze but clog sooner. The shop holds 50, 100, 150, 200, 400 and 800 micron; other ratings and sizes can be quoted within one working day.
