What is 50 micron mesh in mm?

50 micron mesh has openings of 0.05 mm, which is one twentieth of a millimetre. A micron is one thousandth of a millimetre, so 50 microns equals 0.05 mm. Twenty such openings placed side by side measure about 1 mm.

Is 50 micron mesh fine enough to clear cloudy aquarium or pond water?

It will clear water that is cloudy from silt, fine debris and floating particles larger than about 50 microns. It will not clear haze caused by particles much smaller than that, such as some bacterial blooms. If 50 micron mesh leaves the water cloudy, a finer rating such as 25 micron can be made to order.

Can you wash and reuse a 50 micron mesh sock?

Yes. Mesh has an exact opening and rinses clean, so a nylon or polyester mesh sock can be washed and reused. Rinse it inside out in clean water and let it dry. Nylon is not suitable for acids, so avoid acidic cleaners on it.

What is the difference between 50 micron mesh and 50 micron felt?

Mesh stops particles at a fixed opening on its surface, so the cut-off is precise and the sock can be rinsed and reused. Felt traps particles through its depth, so it holds more dirt but is a consumable that you replace. Choose mesh for a sharp cut-off and felt where you need depth filtration or specific temperature and chemical resistance.

Does 50 micron mesh remove bacteria or algae?

No, it does not remove bacteria, which are typically a few microns across or smaller and pass straight through. It catches larger algae fragments and clumps but not single-celled algae under 50 microns. For sterile or near-sterile results you need much finer filtration or different treatment altogether.
